CurrentBody Series 2 vs. Series 3 LED Mask: Which Is Right for You?
Just when I thought I was perfectly happy sitting on my couch looking like a well-lit serial killer for 10 minutes a day, CurrentBody launched a new mask.
I’ve been using CurrentBody LED masks for years, and I currently own both the Series 2 and the newly launched Series 3. So naturally, the question is: Is Series 3 actually better—or is this one of those beauty-tech upgrades designed to make us suddenly dissatisfied with something we loved five minutes ago?
The short answer: Series 3 is a significant upgrade. But that doesn’t automatically mean everyone needs it. Here’s the easy breakdown.

First: What Does Series 2 Do?
The CurrentBody Series 2 is primarily an anti-aging red-light therapy mask. It uses 236 LEDs and three wavelengths:
• 633nm red light — targets fine lines and supports collagen production
• 830nm near-infrared — works deeper to help with firmness and elasticity
• 1072nm deep near-infrared — penetrates even deeper and targets more pronounced signs of aging
CurrentBody recommends 10-minute treatments, and its clinical testing showed improvements in wrinkles, firmness, hydration and elasticity over eight weeks.
Translation: Series 2 is very good at its job. And its job is essentially, “Please convince my skin that we are younger than our birth certificate suggests.”
I’ve used it consistently and love it! It’s an excellent LED mask.
So, What Changed with Series 3?
Quite a lot. Series 3 goes from 236 LEDs to 750 LEDs and expands from three wavelengths to six. You still get the anti-aging trio from Series 2:
• Red — 633nm
• Near-infrared — 830nm
• Deep near-infrared — 1072nm
But Series 3 adds:
• Blue — 415nm: targets blemishes and spots
• Green — 532nm: targets pigmentation and uneven tone
• Yellow — 590nm: targets redness and irritation
In other words, Series 2 mostly asks, “How can we make you look younger?” Series 3 asks, “Okay, but what else is bothering you?”
The BIG Difference: Series 3 Is Customizable
This may actually be the most important upgrade. Series 2 is wonderfully simple: put it on, turn it on, look vaguely frightening for 10 minutes, take it off. Series 3 can still be simple, but it gives you considerably more control allowing you to build your own treatment LED by LED based on your skin concerns.
There are four preset treatment modes:
• Advanced Anti-Aging — lines, wrinkles and firmness
• Advanced Clearing — blemishes, oiliness and redness
• Complexion Corrector — redness and pigmentation
• Balance & Brighten — uneven tone and discoloration
And then there’s MyDose, which connects the mask to the CurrentBody app and lets you customize which wavelengths target different areas of your face. The technology then calculates the appropriate light dose for the treatment you created. Rather than being a mask for one particular concern, Series 3 can stay with you and your skin as your needs evolve.
This is where Series 3 starts feeling less like simply another red-light mask and more like a personalized at-home LED treatment. And yes, my skincare device now has an app. Apparently my face has entered its software era.
Series 2 vs. Series 3 At-a-Glance
What I Notice Using Both
From a user standpoint, the biggest difference isn't simply that Series 3 has more lights. It's that I can choose what I want the mask to address. If my priority is purely anti-aging, Series 2 still gives me the three wavelengths I care most about for lines, firmness and collagen support.
Series 3 becomes much more interesting when I want to address pigmentation, redness, uneven tone or the occasional blemish in addition to aging. And that distinction matters because I don't think everyone needs to automatically replace their Series 2.
So, Which One Should You Buy?
Buy Series 2: if your main concerns are fine lines, wrinkles, firmness and general skin rejuvenation. You want something extremely easy to use, you don't care about an app or customized treatments, and you'd rather save the extra $100. Series 2 is not suddenly obsolete because its younger sibling arrived wearing 514 additional LEDs.
Buy Series 3: if you want to address multiple concerns—especially pigmentation, redness, uneven skin tone or blemishes along with anti-aging. You like being able to customize treatments, and you're willing to spend more for significantly more versatility.
And if you're buying your first CurrentBody mask and the additional $100 isn't a dealbreaker? I'd go Series 3. You're getting much more technology and considerably more flexibility for the difference.

What If You Already Own Series 2?
This is where I’d resist the beauty industry's favorite hobby: convincing us that everything we bought last year is now ancient history. If you already own Series 2 and love it, keep using it. It's still an excellent anti-aging LED mask.
I would consider upgrading to Series 3 if pigmentation, redness, uneven tone or breakouts are important concerns for you—or if you really want the ability to customize your LED treatments. Otherwise, your Series 2 did not turn into a pumpkin overnight.
Final Thoughts
After using both, I don't see Series 3 as simply a more powerful Series 2. It's really a more versatile Series 2. Series 2 remains the straightforward anti-aging workhorse.
Series 3 takes those same core anti-aging wavelengths and adds three additional colors, multiple treatment modes and personalization—which makes it better suited to someone who wants one LED mask to tackle several different skin concerns.
